Itumeleng Kgafela

Itumeleng joined BIMA as the Head of Actuarial in 2020. She is responsible for designing insurance offerings suitable for the needs of under-served families in Asia and Africa, providing pricing and actuarial support on new and existing products, as well as collaborating and negotiating with external stakeholders in the markets in which BIMA operates such as insurers, regulators and reinsurers.

Itumeleng has 10 years of experience in the insurance industry and the actuarial profession. Prior to joining BIMA, Itumeleng was Pricing Actuary at the Reinsurance Group of America, London office, a global reinsurer with a specific focus on life and health-related reinsurance solutions. Prior to this, she worked as the Life Insurance Actuary at Vodacom South Africa (a subsidiary of the Vodafone Group), where she was responsible for all the actuarial aspects of the Vodacom Life Assurance business including valuations, product development, pricing and product training.

She started her career at Deloitte Actuarial and Insurance Solutions in South Africa, where she spent six years, building extensive technical expertise and insurance knowledge. At Deloitte, her clients included major African insurers.

Itumeleng is a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, Fellow of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, holds a Business Science degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town, and is currently completing an Executive Post-Graduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation at the University of Oxford.
